Join Janele Bayless, Wellness Coordinator in Nutrition Education, for a breakfast cooking demo! Janele will teach us how to whip up two easy on-the-go breakfast recipes, including a snickerdoodle chickpea smoothie (vegan) and an omelet in a mug (vegetarian option).     Join OUAB for OUAB in the Kitchen: At-Home Edition - Pesto, Pasta and Pizza for a chance to cook a meal of your own under the guidance of the Union's own professional chef, Chef Wolf. Following a cooking demonstration by the chef, students will create the menu providing a unique hands-on learning opportunity virtually, from the comfort of their own home. In this fun and interactive environment, students will enjoy a delicious meal and gain useful culinary skills to show off in their own kitchens.

    This panel discussion will highlight tips from current graduate students on how to be successful in graduate school. Students will share their advice on managing faculty relationships, getting (and staying) organized, how to prioritize activities, and staying motivated. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during the panel.

  5. Basic Coding & Analysis in Qualitative Research

    In this session, Antonio will walk attendees through the basics of qualitative data analysis. In particular, this session will cover 10 recommendations to keep in mind while engaging in analyzing qualitative data beginning with making sure to align one's analysis with epistemology, theory, and methodology.     This workshop introduces Nvivo12 as a tool to organize and manage qualitative data for analysis. Nvivo12 is a powerful qualitative analysis software that is amenable to support various qualitative theoretical or methodological approaches. This workshop is designed to facilitate participants’ fundamental knowledge on how Nvivo12 review, as well as conduct initial analysis of large qualitative dataset using Nvivo12. This workshop is designed as an interactive lecture and consultation—exploring the basics of Nvivo12 and how Nvivo12 expedites literature reviews.

    This session will serve as an open student forum for participants who are considering using qualitative approaches in their research, work, or independent projects. The primary focus of this session will be to allow participants to share their thoughts, questions, and approaches to conducting, completing, and reviewing qualitative research. Information and ideas shared in this session will be used to cultivate future programming workshops, bootcamps, and series to benefit the professional development of our students.  

  9. Aligning Approaches and Methodologies to your Research and Research Question

    Your decisions as a researcher matters! As Dr. Kakali Bhattacharya (2017) states, “By now you should be aware of the fact that qualitative research is not only diverse, but there is no one correct way of designing or conducting a qualitative study” (p. 92), but this can be confusing for scholars new to qualitative research. This session is focuses on various decisions that you will make as a qualitative researcher. For example, we will discuss the qualitative research approaches and their congruent methodologies and methods.

    In this presentation we will explore contemporary issues in qualitative research that doctoral students should know. While qualitative researchers are “interested in understanding the meaning people have constructed”, this presentation will explore how research becomes me-search. The presenter will share stories as a way of knowing that can create both power and art of possibilities to reimagine and think about me-search in qualitative research.
